Screened
or unscreened, covered or uncovered, porches extend the living space outdoors.
Porches offer a comfortable, AC-free place to sit, eat, watch the trees
and wildlife. This becomes a three- or four-season place in central Virginia.
Many of our clients find these to be their favorite spots.
A porch doesn't need to be large to draw you outside. Built-in benches,
screens, and pergolas can define or protect the space. Different weather-
and insect-resistant woods offer different aesthetics and durability. Lighting
can help create the feeling of an outdoor living room.
These are transitional spaces, a middle ground between inside and outside.
They help create a pause, a link between out and in. A porch that is only
accessible from inside the house extends the privacy of the home. One that
allows a step-down to the ground is flexible enough for larger gatherings
of people. |
